After the accidental death of his wife, the now single father Juha bilges and decays up to the point when he happens to stumble into domina Mona’s torture cellar, who in turn thinks he is one of her clients with a fetish for suffocation. In his near death experience he feels so close to his deceased love that he convinces Mona to go to ever increasing extremes of cutting his air supply. J-P Valkeapää’s BDSM love story is one of the most surprising and challenging films of the year: one that hurts so much sometimes that all you want to do is to scream, but also one that makes you so happy in the end that all you want to do is cry out of joy. And it is an ode to pain as an existential feeling that can open up new doors of perception. Fantastic!
