Chained for Life
US 2018 | 91 Min
| DCP
The young actress Mabel lands the lead in a new horror film, heading a cast put together by a European art-house director that consists entirely of physically deformed people. In between takes she befriends Rosenthal, whose exceptional appearance has labeled him a monster both in art and in life. Chained for Life has a fundamentally romantic spirit, but does not romanticize: Mabel wanders along the narrow ledge between empathy and pity, but becomes neither a white savior, nor is Aaron Scheinberg’s directorial debut an unthinking embrace of Freaks: Tod Browning’s central work is an absolute soulmate of this masterpiece.
